## **Which ice bath should I choose?**

When choosing the right ice bath tub, there are several key factors to consider to ensure you get the most out of your purchase. Here is what I recommend keeping an eye on:

- **Size and capacity** : Ice bath tubs are available in several sizes. The most common have a diameter of 80-90 cm and a height of 70-80 cm, which comfortably fits most people under 210 cm. Here, you sit comfortably with full body coverage. If you need more space—for example, if you are extra tall, broad-shouldered, want room for 2 people at once, or simply want to stretch your legs out completely—there are also larger models with extra volume and a wider opening. These offer plenty of room for a full ice bath experience, regardless of body type.
- **Materials** : The material plays an essential role when choosing an ice bath tub. Most budget-friendly models are made from durable nylon with a smooth, skin-friendly inner lining that is both comfortable and retains the cold well. If you want a bit of extra thermal insulation, look for a model with a built-in foam layer—it makes a bigger difference than you might think. The more premium tubs are made with a stiffer and more robust PVC construction that stays completely stable and maintains its shape, even with daily use or when left outside in all kinds of weather.
- **Features** : It’s the small details that make all the difference in everyday use. A lid keeps the water clean and cold for longer, and fortunately, most ice baths on the market include one. It’s also worth checking how the tub drains. Some models feature clever drainage systems that make emptying it quick and easy. *(I definitely recommend these, especially if you use it regularly.)* Love a little extra luxury? Look for a tub that can be connected to [**an external water chiller**](https://swimsorted.ie/?vtp_go=1&u=https%3A%2F%2Fwatery.ie%2Fproducts%2Fwatery-water-cooler-for-ice-bath-dense-cooler-black&pid=7906) , so you’ll always have ice-cold water ready without having to lug bags of ice around every time. It’s a small upgrade, but it makes a huge difference if you take ice baths regularly.

4.5/5

| **Water capacity** | 330 litres |
| --- | --- |
| **Dimensions** | Diameter of 90 cm and height of 80 cm |
| **Capacity** | 1 person |
| **Can be connected to an external water chiller** | Yes |

The first on our list is the Watery Deluxe ice tub, which is an obvious choice for anyone looking for a more stable and robust solution for the perfect cold plunge experience. The entire ice bath is inflatable, meaning it can easily be packed away and moved around. But just because it is inflatable doesn’t mean it’s low quality or prone to collapsing. In fact, the ice bath is built with a drop-stitch construction that ensures an incredibly solid and rigid structure. The best on the market.

The ice bath’s materials are UV-resistant, tear-resistant, and durable against sharp objects. This means it can easily stay outdoors all year round, whether it’s raining, snowing, or the sun is beating down.

The ice bath comes with everything you need: an insulating lid, pump, carry bag, repair kit, and user manual. The great thing is that the insulated lid can be secured with its buckles, ensuring an extra-tight seal that helps maintain the low temperature for longer.

Another key advantage worth highlighting is that the Deluxe model is compatible with an **[external water chiller](https://swimsorted.ie/?vtp_go=1&u=https%3A%2F%2Fwatery.ie%2Fproducts%2Fwatery-water-cooler-for-ice-bath-dense-cooler-black&pid=7906)**, giving you full control over the water temperature—even in the summer. That way, you don’t have to hassle with bags of ice every time you want to take a cold plunge.

#### Pros

- Fast cooling = perfect for effective post-workout recovery
- Incredibly stable and durable
- Can be used year-round – built to withstand Irish wind and weather
- Can be connected to an external water chiller

#### Cons

- Only fits 1 person at a time
- Only available in one colour (Black)

| --- | --- |
| **Dimensions** | Diameter of 80 cm and height of 70 cm |
| **Capacity** | 1 person |

The Watery Hero ice bath is rated as one of the best choices for home use – especially thanks to its price, flexibility, and user-friendliness. It is inflatable (and foldable) and designed to be spacious with a 350-litre capacity. This means it can easily accommodate individuals up to 210 cm tall, yet it weighs only 3.5 kg when empty.

This makes it a practical solution for anyone looking for a portable ice bath that is easy to move and store – perfect for use on the patio or in the garden.

One of the most impressive features of the “Hero” model is the Cold-Reef® technology, which ensures efficient cooling over a longer period. - Spacious design accommodating individuals up to 210 cm tall
- Durable materials that withstand frequent use and sun exposure

Hero Max is crafted from durable materials and insulated with Cold-Reef® technology and 5-layer protection, effectively retaining the cold for hours at a time. The inflatable Watery Seal Real bathtub is a great alternative to more traditional ice baths – especially because it allows you to lie down, which is unusual for this type of tub. Being able to lean all the way back in the ice-cold water offers a completely different experience.

The tub measures 147 cm in length and 80 cm in width, providing plenty of space – even for tall people. This makes it a roomy and comfortable solution for anyone looking for a bit more relaxation during their ice bath.

Although this bathtub doesn’t have the heavy-duty insulation found in dedicated ice baths, you still get effective cooling when you add ice.
Just keep in mind that the water warms up faster, so you may need to add extra ice along the way to keep the water cold. However, for those who want the option to lie down in an ice bath – something rarely found on the market – it is a major advantage.

As a secondary feature, the **Seal Real** can also be used as a relaxing bathtub if you want to use it indoors or outdoors for warm, soothing baths.

#### Pros

- Unique option to lie down in an ice bath
- Easy to store and move thanks to the inflatable design
- Made from durable PVC that is easy to clean
- Easy inflation and drainage with an electric pump and drain hose

#### Cons

- Lack of insulation may require extra ice to keep the water cold for longer

## What is an ice bath?

An ice bath is specially designed to keep water cold and allow the body to experience the many benefits of cold water therapy. The ice bath is typically filled with water and large amounts of ice to achieve a very low temperature, often between 5–15 degrees. This form of therapy is frequently used by athletes to promote recovery after training, or by people who want to improve their mental and physical well-being.

The difference between an ice bath tub and a regular bathtub lies primarily in insulation and purpose. While a standard bathtub is intended for warm baths and relaxation, an ice bath is constructed to keep the water cold for longer periods. Some ice baths feature multiple layers of insulation to help retain the cold, whereas inflatable tubs without insulation may require continuous addition of ice to maintain the low temperature.

## Full overview: Pros and cons of an ice bath

An ice bath can provide you with [many health benefits](https://www.sygeforsikring.dk/nyt-sundt/vinterbadning-et-koldt-gys-er-godt-de-fleste), enjoyed by both athletes and those looking to enhance their general well-being. However, it is also important to understand the drawbacks before jumping into the cold water.

### **Benefits of an ice bath:**

- **Strengthened immune system** : Frequent use of an ice bath can actually strengthen your immune system. Exposure to the cold activates the immune response, making you more resilient against infections such as colds and other upper respiratory illnesses.
- **Improved blood circulation** : When you step into cold water, your blood vessels constrict, directing blood flow toward your internal organs. After the bath, the blood vessels expand again, leading to enhanced blood circulation—it acts like a workout for your vascular system.
- **Increased mental strength** : Overcoming the initial shock of stepping into freezing cold water can significantly boost your mental resilience. Ice bathing can serve as a powerful exercise in willpower and mental toughness.
- **Better muscle recovery** : If you play sports or work out regularly, ice baths can help you recover faster. The cold reduces muscle soreness and inflammation, allowing for quicker recovery times.
- **Energy boost** : In need of an energy lift? A cold ice bath triggers the release of adrenaline and dopamine in the brain, giving you a natural boost that leaves you feeling refreshed and energized.
- **Improved sleep** : Ice bath tubs can also help you sleep better. The cold lowers your core body temperature, creating optimal conditions for deep, restful sleep.
- **Regulation of brown fat** : Repeated use of an ice bath tub can also help your body regulate brown fat, which helps keep the body warm and burns calories more efficiently.

### **Disadvantages of ice baths:**

- **Cold shock** : When you step into the cold water, you may experience a cold shock. This can cause you to hyperventilate and gasp for breath, which can be uncomfortable, especially the first few times.
- **Not suitable for everyone** : If you suffer from heart disease, high blood pressure, or other health issues, you should consult a doctor before trying an ice bath. It is important to know your limits and ensure that ice baths are safe for you.
- **Risk of hypothermia** : If you stay in the water for too long, you risk developing hypothermia, where your core body temperature drops to dangerously low levels. Make sure to stick to the recommended times to avoid this.
- **Time-consuming to prepare** : It can take time to fill the ice bath tub with water and ice, and getting the right temperature can also require a bit of extra planning, especially if you want to use it frequently.
- **Discomfort at first** : The first few times you use an ice bath, it can be an uncomfortable experience until your body adapts to the cold. But over time, it becomes easier and more comfortable.

Although there are disadvantages to ice bath tubs, the health benefits for many are so significant that it is worth giving it a try. By gradually getting your body used to the cold and starting out cautiously, you can enjoy ice baths and their many positive effects.

## How long should you stay in an ice bath?

When using an ice bath, it is important to start cautiously and gradually accustom your body to the cold temperatures. Generally, it is recommended to start with 2–5 minutes in the ice bath and then slowly increase the duration over several weeks. The goal can be to reach around 10–15 minutes, but it is essential to listen to your body along the way (source: [Health.com](https://www.health.com/ice-baths-8404207)).

For beginners, I recommend starting by only immersing parts of your body, such as your legs, at first. That way, you get used to the cold without subjecting your entire body to the shock right away. Also, always make sure to get out if you begin to feel uncomfortable or experience symptoms of hypothermia, such as dizziness or numbness.

## Things to be aware of before using an ice bath tub

Before using an ice bath tub, it is important to consult a doctor, especially if you have health conditions such as heart issues, high blood pressure, or diabetes. Ice baths should be avoided if you are pregnant, have a pacemaker, have experienced frostbite, or have had recent surgery.

When your body is exposed to cold water, the blood vessels can constrict, which can increase blood pressure and, in rare cases, pose a risk of cardiac arrest or stroke. Stop immediately if you experience dizziness, discomfort, or any other adverse symptoms, and seek medical attention if necessary.

## Where can I buy an ice bath?

In Ireland, ice baths have, as mentioned, become incredibly popular, which also means that many retailers have entered the market. Our clear recommendation is to choose a well-established company with expertise in both products and customer service.

That is why we at Vandklar recommend shopping directly with us at Watery – the Nordic region’s largest retailer of swimming gear and all water accessories.

[Our Trustpilot score](https://dk.trustpilot.com/review/watery.dk) is right at the top, we offer fast delivery, and our prices are among the best on the market. That is why we believe Watery is the obvious choice when investing in an ice bath tub.
