## Why are mermaid tails so popular?

Not many years ago, I never saw anyone using mermaid tails in swimming pools in Ireland. But in the last couple of years, I’ve seen more and more children using them. And initially, I thought ‘why’? But then it hit me that it really is a genuinely cool and fun piece of kit.

And it seems I’m certainly not the only one who thinks so. Because with a mermaid tail, you can glide through the water just like the characters from The Little Mermaid, which pretty much all of us have dreamt about at some point or another. 

Having tried swimming with a mermaid tail myself, there’s no doubt that I find it super fun. And the children I’ve seen using them in the pools definitely seem to have a blast too. 

And at the end of the day, that’s probably what makes them so popular. 

## How a mermaid tail with a monofin works

- The child must be able to swim at least 25 metres unassisted and without any swimming aids
- The child must be able to do the butterfly kick on both their front and back. Otherwise, they won’t be able to swim with it at all. 

To be safe, it is vital that an adult keeps a close eye on children whenever they are swimming with a mermaid tail. But as long as the guidelines above are followed, swimming with one is safe, fun, and worry-free.

As a general rule, mermaid tails can be used in both the bathtub and the swimming pool. The most fun is definitely in the swimming pool, where you can move around freely with it. It’s a bit harder in a bathtub. 

In theory, a mermaid tail can also be used at the beach or in a lake. But I strongly recommend against doing that. The risk of accidents is simply too great. Especially at the beach, where there are waves and currents in the water. 

So stick to using it either in the bathtub or in the swimming pool. That’s where you’ll get the most out of it, and it’s also the safest option.

## How to put on your mermaid tail

A mermaid tail needs to fit snugly, especially around the feet. This often leads to questions about the best way to put on a mermaid tail. But it is actually nowhere near as difficult as you might think. 

1. First, put the monofin on your feet
2. Pull the fabric suit over the monofin and then up your body, all the way to your hips
3. Check that the suit fits properly and snugly before you jump into the water

Your feet will be virtually locked into the monofin. This means you will need to swim by moving your legs up and down together. 

## Size guide for choosing a mermaid tail size

When choosing the right size mermaid tail, it’s all about measuring three different areas on the body. Your shoe size is completely irrelevant here. Instead, it is your measurements around the waist, hips, and from waist to floor that determine which size you should choose.

Simply choose the size that is closest to your child’s body measurements. That will give them the absolute best experience in the water.

## How to swim with your new mermaid tail

Swimming with a mermaid tail is not quite like regular swimming. Both of your legs are enclosed inside the tail, so you cannot, for example, use your legs for breaststroke. You can’t really swim front crawl with a mermaid tail either. 

The way you swim with a mermaid tail is by doing the so-called butterfly kick (also known as a dolphin kick or mermaid kick). In short, it involves kicking with both legs, in the same direction, at the same time. 

It is a really good idea to practice the mermaid kick before putting on the mermaid tail. And here is how you do it:

1. Keep your legs together
2. Undulate in a wave motion with your whole body, from your fingertips down to your toes
3. Press your body down with your chest

When you are ready to try swimming with your mermaid tail for the first time, I recommend following the steps below:

1. Start by trying to swim with the mermaid kick without wearing the mermaid tail
2. Once you feel comfortable with the movements, put on the monofin and swim with just that. Here, you will experience how much propulsion you actually get from wearing the monofin
3. Once you are comfortable swimming with the monofin, put on the rest of the mermaid tail and swim with it in shallow water
4. While you are in the shallow water, practice taking the mermaid tail off quickly
5. Be aware that when you swim with a mermaid tail, you will naturally draw attention. If others want to try your mermaid tail, they should go through the exact same learning steps I have described here

## How to best care for your new mermaid tail

A mermaid tail is not a cheap piece of swimming gear. Therefore, I imagine you would like it to last for as long as possible. If you follow my three tips below, you will have certainly done your part to ensure you can enjoy your mermaid tail for many years to come. 

### Avoid rough and hard surfaces

Avoid jumping around in your mermaid tail or monofin. Also, avoid rubbing the fabric against rough and hard surfaces such as rocks, stones or rough pool edges. This will damage the fabric quite quickly. 

### Rinse in clean water after each use

To remove bacteria, chlorine, sand or salt from your mermaid tail, remember to rinse it thoroughly with clean water after each use. This helps the colour last longer, preserves the fit, prevents unpleasant odours, and ensures the material retains its properties. 

### In case you have bent the monofin insert

If you accidentally bend the monofin insert, it is not necessarily the end of the world. Simply remove the monofin cover and use a handheld hairdryer to heat up the bent insert. This will soften the monofin, allowing you to reshape it back to its normal form.
