When you hear the term water shoes, you probably think of items like Crocs, sandals, or flip-flops. But water shoes are much more than that. There are many different models and designs that are far better suited for a trip to the beach or the swimming pool than traditional flip-flops.
For a trip to the beach, especially rocky or pebbly beaches, it’s a great idea to choose models with a soft rubber sole. For a visit to the local swimming pool or the hotel pool, having a soft sole isn’t as crucial.
For both purposes, however, it’s essential that they fit snugly on your feet—just like a regular pair of shoes. This ensures optimal comfort and safety, preventing you from twisting an ankle or getting nasty blisters.
Fit snugly around the entire foot so you won’t lose them, just like regular shoes.
They are typically made of neoprene and feature a soft, slightly thick sole that protects you against sharp stones and broken glass. I recommend this type for trips to the beach.
Are essentially designed on the same principle as water shoes. They won’t easily slip off and fit snugly around the whole foot.
Plus, they are easier to put on than standard water shoes, as you simply pull them on like a pair of socks. Swim socks are primarily used by babies and children.
Are quite similar to flip-flops. However, while flip-flops are seen more as casual footwear, pool slides offer far better safety and support.
The sole is made from non-slip rubber so you won’t slip on wet surfaces. And they are great
In addition, there are dedicated pool shoes as well as water sports and swim shoes. The former are made of rubber, which effectively keeps you from slipping on wet surfaces. On the other hand, they can get too warm for a trip to the beach on a hot summer day, making them ideal exclusively for the swimming pool or by the hotel pool.
Water sports and swim shoes are designed specifically for water sports activities, whether that’s SUP (Stand Up Paddleboarding), swimming, or kayaking. These shoes are constructed somewhat like traditional water shoes, but feature specific design elements that make them ideal for water sports.
As I touched upon in the previous section, water shoes are practically a must at the beach. At least if you care about your feet. That applies whether you are just paddling along the water’s edge, going winter swimming, or taking the kids out for a dip in the waves.
On beaches, there is a high risk of getting stones, shells, and other sharp objects stuck in your foot. Therefore, it is important that your water shoes have a sturdy sole to protect you against exactly that.
And if you are heading to the beach in places like Croatia, which is a popular summer holiday destination for many Irish families, water shoes with a solid sole are especially important. Their beaches have plenty of sea urchins. And stepping on one of those is certainly no fun!
In addition, it is also important that they fit snugly on your feet. Both to prevent you from getting blisters while wearing them, and to ensure they do not easily slip off when you are swimming or wading through the water.
To ensure the best safety and comfort, getting the right size is essential. Water shoes really do need to fit very snugly on your feet. It is actually preferable for your toes to touch the very front of the shoe.
Just remember to clip your toenails beforehand so you do not damage the shoes!
Unless the retailer provides specific sizing guidelines, the general rule of thumb is to choose a model that is one size smaller than your normal shoe size. This ensures a snug fit, preventing them from slipping off in the water and causing blisters when walking around in them.
To get the most out of your new water shoes for as long as possible, it is important to follow a few simple maintenance tips. Here they are below.
Regardless of what type of water you have been in, it is important to rinse them in clean water immediately after use. If you have been to the beach, sand will almost certainly have gotten into the shoes, and you will want to wash that out.
And whether you have been in chlorinated, salt, or lake water, this should also be rinsed away to prevent unpleasant odours.
Also, remember that your water shoes must be completely dry before packing them away. If they are still damp when packed, there is a high risk of mould developing, which can be difficult to get rid of again.
Even though most water shoes are made with a thick rubber sole, the sole will wear out quickly if you use them like regular footwear. Therefore, only use them on the beach or by the pool. And ideally, only when you are in the water.
However, if you simply stick to using them by the pool or on the beach, you have already done a lot to prolong the lifespan of your water shoes.
