What makes kids’ diving goggles unique compared to adult diving goggles is, naturally, the size of the mask. Children’s smaller face shapes simply mean that if they use adult diving goggles, water will start leaking in because adult goggles aren’t made to fit snugly against children’s smaller faces.

With their smaller frame, kids’ diving goggles sit properly on children’s faces. This ensures that water doesn’t seep into the mask and that they fit much more comfortably.
In addition, account has naturally been taken of the fact that kids love colours. Most kids’ diving goggles therefore come in colours that children traditionally love.
Apart from that, there really isn’t much difference between kids’ diving goggles and adult diving goggles.
Kids’ swim goggles and diving masks come in several different qualities, types, and lens colours. It can therefore be a bit of a jungle to figure out which model to choose for your child.
Below, I’ll go through the most important factors you should consider before buying a pair.
The first thing you need to consider when buying goggles for your child is the lens colour. The colour of the lenses is actually quite important to ensure optimal performance under the specific conditions each colour is designed for.

Best for: Regular bright conditions with intense glare
The blue lens provides relatively clear vision while protecting the eyes from strong glare. This could be glare coming from the sun’s reflection on the water, for example. If you’re heading to the local swimming pool, or your child is snorkelling on the surface at the beach, goggles with a blue lens are ideal.

Best for: Low-light conditions
The clear lens is essentially just a piece of standard clear glass in front of the eyes. Therefore, the clear lens provides no protection against the sun’s rays, underwater pool lights, or sharp glare. On the other hand, they provide completely natural and clear vision.
That makes clear lenses ideal for places with low-light conditions. This is typically indoors at the swimming pool, or when diving down a couple of metres into the sea.

Best for: Bright light conditions
A mirror lens reflects light away from the goggles. Therefore, they only allow very little light to pass through the lens to the eyes. Your child’s vision will be significantly darker with mirror lenses. They are therefore not suitable for use when diving in darker conditions.
On the other hand, this makes them perfect for use in bright light conditions. For example, when diving near the surface at the beach in bright sunshine.
Goggles with mirror lenses are most often used for competitive swimming in indoor pools. And they are very rarely used for open water diving.

Best for: Medium-bright light conditions
A smoke or black lens reduces the amount of light reaching the eyes. The smoke versions allow a relatively high amount of light in, while black lenses darken the vision considerably.
Goggles with a smoke or black lens are sensible all-round goggles that can be used in most conditions. However, I recommend using them in medium-bright light conditions, such as just below the surface of the sea or in most indoor swimming pools.
Do not use them in low-light conditions, however, as they will make it even harder to see anything.

The next thing you should consider is whether your child needs a mask or swimming goggles. There are pros and cons to both types, which I will explain in more detail below.
Swimming goggles are what we see professional swimmers wear. They are streamlined to provide less water resistance. Plus, they fit snugly right around the eyes, which is recommended for children aged 6 to 12 years.

Unlike swimming goggles, a mask sits around the outside of the eyes. This is recommended for children aged 2 to 8 years. They are significantly more comfortable and offer a wider field of view, though at the expense of slightly higher water resistance.

An example of a mask is the Watery Mantis 2.0
When buying swimming goggles for kids, it is best to choose a model based on what they will be used for. You need to consider whether they are meant for competitive swimming or just for splashing around and playing.
When buying swimming goggles for competitive use, they need to be as streamlined as possible. In competitions, speed is everything. That is why the goggles must offer the lowest possible water resistance.

It is also an advantage for the goggles to have a narrower field of vision, allowing your child to focus one hundred percent on moving forward. Dark-tinted lenses are also ideal, as they make it easier to concentrate in the pool water.

If your child is going to play and splash around in their swim goggles, comfort should be the top priority. A mask-style design is advantageous as it offers a wide field of vision without pinching around the eye sockets. Clear lenses are also ideal, as they make it easier to see.

For swim goggles to stay watertight, getting the right size is essential. And since it is practically impossible to test goggles in water in the shops, there is fortunately another great way to check if you have found the right size.
Simply place the goggles over your child’s eyes without putting the strap around their head. If the goggles stay in place via suction for a couple of seconds or more, they fit perfectly. This significantly reduces the risk of water leaking in.
Depending on the model you choose, kids’ swim goggles can be a relatively substantial investment. You will therefore likely want to ensure your child can enjoy their goggles for as long as possible.
There are two great products you can use to help extend the lifespan of your child’s new swim goggles.
Most children’s swim goggles come with a factory anti-fog coating. However, this coating gradually wears off with regular use. When that happens, many parents might be tempted to buy a new pair, as foggy goggles are extremely annoying.
But there is no need to replace the goggles just because they start fogging up. Instead, you can regularly re-treat the lenses so your child can continue to dive and swim fog-free.

All you need is an anti-fog spray. Simply apply two sprays to the lenses, spread the liquid using gentle circular motions, and rinse off any excess with clean water. This ensures your child will enjoy a fog-free swim for the next 8–12 sessions.
To protect against scratches on the lenses and at the same time help your child keep track of their new diving mask, you can advantageously get a swimming goggle case. Whenever the diving mask is not in use, simply place it in the case. This protects it from any sharp objects that could scratch the lenses or damage the strap.

A swimming goggle case also makes it easier to keep track of the diving mask so it doesn’t get lost.
