For some, the bubble design may just be an aesthetic choice that stands out from the ordinary swim cap, but there is actually a deeper purpose behind the design. The small bubbles create tiny air pockets on the inside, trapping air warmed by body heat.

At first glance, you might think a swim cap is just a swim cap. But that is not quite the case in reality. Below, I will cover the different types available so you can find out which one best suits your needs.
The most durable swim cap you can get is a silicone swim cap. Silicone is an incredibly flexible material that can withstand being stretched a lot without breaking.
Compared to other rubber materials, silicone is relatively expensive. Therefore, a silicone swim cap also costs more than swim caps made from other materials. On the other hand, it also lasts a very long time.
A latex swim cap is often very cheap, especially compared to silicone ones. However, being cheap comes at a cost, as the durability is genuinely not very good.
Latex can be stretched an incredible amount, but it also tears easily. And if you get even a tiny tear in your latex swim cap, it is ready for the bin. The rest will simply rip as soon as you put it on your head.
A racing swim cap is usually made of silicone. However, what sets a racing swim cap apart from a standard silicone cap is its cut, panels, and fit. All of these factors have an impact on your speed in the water.
Racing swim caps come in specific sizes. They are also quite expensive. On the other hand, you will only be using it for competitions, where 0.01 seconds can mean the difference between 1st and 3rd place.
Swim caps for long hair are essentially just like standard swim caps. They are simply slightly roomier inside, allowing space for your long hair. If you have long hair and have ever tried putting on a regular swim cap, you know just how difficult it can be.

There can be several good reasons to swim with a swim cap. But the most common purpose among regular fitness swimmers is to protect their hair from chlorine. Chlorine really isn’t particularly good for our hair.
In addition to protecting your hair, a swim cap also reduces water resistance when swimming with your head underwater. Hair creates quite a lot of drag, so by tucking it away under a swim cap, you can actually swim faster without exerting more effort.
And a swim cap also helps you keep your head warm in the water. For most people, this isn’t an issue in indoor swimming pools. But if your circulation isn’t what it used to be, a swim cap will help maintain body temperature in your head.
Last but not least, a swim cap also helps you keep your hair in check. Wet hair is just as unruly as loose hair in windy weather, so when you tuck your hair away under a swim cap, you avoid getting it in your eyes.
Whether you often visit the swimming pool or only go once in a while, chlorine is by no means good for your hair. Chlorine actually dries out your hair, leaving it dry, tangled, and over time, not looking its best.
That’s why it’s a great idea to use anti-chlorine shampoo and conditioner when you shower after a swim in the pool. Anti-chlorine shampoo is specially formulated to wash all the chlorine out of your hair. And the conditioner helps make your hair both soft and shiny, which chlorine is otherwise all too good at undoing.
Anti-chlorine shampoo and conditioner are suitable for both short and long hair. And I recommend using it straight after every trip to the pool—ideally immediately afterwards!
